Newsroom deadline planning

A fire breaks out at 19:18. Get a reporter and a photographer on it, and page 1 to the plate room by 21:30.

Mission

0 of 3 steps done

Wednesday, 19:20. The wire flashes: fire at the Old Mill warehouse on Canal Street. Page 1 goes to the plate room at 21:30.

  1. Put a reporter on MILL-FIRE. — To do

Drag the red MILL-FIRE clipping from the wire tray straight down to Tomás Reyes (News), the only reporter free at 19:30, or right-click it and assign it. Any later and it misses the 20:30 copy deadline.

  2. Send a photographer to Canal Street. — To do

Drag the MILL-FIRE pictures down to Sam Achterberg (Pictures). Noor Haddad is refused: from Riverside Stadium she cannot be there before 19:55.

  3. Sub page 1 once the copy lands. — To do

The red MILL-FIRE subbing slot on Iris Lund (Copy desk) starts before the copy is filed. Drag it down to Ben Asante at 20:30, or click it and take the earliest slot: Iris subs the opera review from 20:45.

About 30 seconds. Steps tick off as you complete them.

Keyboard: focus the grid, then use arrow keys, Enter and Alt+arrows to move.

The situation.

The Linden Gazette is a fictional regional daily. Its night editor plans the evening against the print deadlines: every story needs a reporter on shift, a sub-editor once the copy is filed, a page designer once the copy is subbed and the pictures are in, and a press that only rolls when every page of the edition has been sent.

Breaking news reshuffles all of it. A board that only shows bars hides the chain from the reporter to the press; this one draws it, refuses what the desk cannot do (a photographer who cannot get there, copy that misses the edition), flags what no longer fits and keeps the copy landing on the desk in view, hour by hour.

What you will do

You will assign a breaking story to the only free reporter, send the photographer who can reach the fire in time and move the front page subbing so page 1 makes the First edition.

Where the library ends and your application begins.

SuperScheduler provides

  • A resource tree of desks and staff with three rowHeaderColumns (who, a copy gauge, where they are), and a frozen top row (frozen: 'top') that onBeforeCellRender fills with the words filed each hour.
  • Three time-header rows: a dateline, edition bands drawn as header areas, and an hour row written like a timetable by onBeforeTimeHeaderRender; hidden time (onIncludeTimeCell) keeps the board to the working evening.
  • Clippings as HTML cards with areas (a words-filed bar), disabled cells for off-shift hours, travel bands painted into the photographers’ rows, finish-to-start links from the reporter to the press, and separators at the edition deadlines and the newsroom clock.
  • Live search and status filters through control.events.filter() and onEventFilter, the desk filter through control.rows.filter() and onRowFilter, and saved views (getViewState, applyViewState) as the paper’s section tabs.
  • The minimap of the copy flow, the full crosshair, zoom levels, keyboard moves, undo history, the event hover card and the drag card (super-scheduler/react-render), and a context menu in the paper's skin.

This example’s code decides

  • Who does what: stories go to reporters, pictures to photographers, subbing to the copy desk, make-up to page designers; shifts, the clock and the copy and page deadlines refuse a drop in onEventMoving, with the edition it misses.
  • Travel: a photographer must get from one job to the next, measured on a small map of the city.
  • The chain: subbing after filing, make-up after subbing and pictures, presses after the last page; what breaks it is flagged, not refused.
  • Suggestions: who is free for the wire copy, and the earliest slot that keeps the chain, recorded as one undo step.
  • Every figure: words filed per reporter, pages on course per edition, the copy landing on the desk per hour against its capacity, and the stamps on the clippings.

The code behind this demo.

These are the files this page runs, not a simplified copy. They compile against the public SuperScheduler Pro exports.

The integration: zoom levels with three header rows, hidden time, rowHeaderColumns, the frozen copy-flow row, disabled cells and travel bands, separators, links built from the chain, the live search and the filters, the hover card, the drag verdict and the context menu, and the callbacks where the desk’s rules refuse a drop or snap it to a quarter hour.
