Mission

0 of 3 steps done

Wednesday, 14:05. gpu-a04 threw ECC errors at 13:50 and was drained; the run on it, train-vision-7b, went back to the queue at high priority. It must start again by 15:00.

  1. Start train-vision-7b on an A-class node before 15:00. — To do

    Drag it from the high row of the queue pane straight up onto gpu-a03: the drop takes the GPUs of the two preemptible sweeps. B-class nodes refuse it (48 GB). Or type :mv! train-vision-7b gpu-a03 14:15.

  2. Move its eval and export after the training. — To do

    On gpu-b02, press v and drag a rectangle around eval-vision-7b and export-vision-7b, then drag one of them right past 20:15. Or right-click the eval and choose Cascade.

  3. Save this view as triage. — To do

    Press : and type w triage, then Enter. The view appears as window 1 in the status line; :e triage brings it back.

About 30 seconds. Steps tick off as you complete them.

Keyboard: focus the grid, then use arrow keys, Enter and Alt+arrows to move.

The situation.

batchd is the fictional scheduler of a machine learning lab: ten nodes of eight GPUs in three racks (80 GB A-class for training, 48 GB B-class for evaluation, 24 GB L-class for inference) and a queue in three priority classes. Researchers submit jobs; a node runs several at once as long as their GPUs fit, and preemptible sweeps fill the gaps until something more important needs them.

The people who run such a cluster live in terminals. This board keeps their idiom (panes, a command line, block-character meters) but draws the plan on a timeline: what holds each node now and tonight, what waits in the queue, which pipeline breaks when a job moves. A drag and a typed command go through the same rules.

What you will do

You will reschedule a failed training run onto a free A-class node by preempting two sweeps, move its evaluation and export after it together, and save the result as a view.

Where the library ends and your application begins.

SuperScheduler provides

  • SchedulerPanes (super-scheduler/panes): the nodes and the queue as two panes over one timeline, with a shared zoom and scroll, a keyboard-resizable splitter and moves between panes.
  • A resource tree (racks and nodes) with rowHeaderColumns, a frozen summary row painted by onBeforeCellRender, and two time-header rows written by onBeforeTimeHeaderRender.
  • Overlapping events stacked in lanes (allowEventOverlap, eventMarginBottom), two-line HTML cards, disabled cells for drained nodes, finish-to-start links and a separator at the cluster clock.
  • Event selection by click, Ctrl/⌘+click and rectangles (rectangleSelectHandling, startRectangle), moved together with allowMultiMove, and the full keyboard model (keyboardMode: 'Full').
  • rows.filter and events.filter behind the :filter command and the live search, getViewState and applyViewState (super-scheduler/views) behind :w and :e.
  • The minimap (super-scheduler/minimap) with your own series and tones, zoom levels, undo history, the event hover card, the drag card and a context menu in the product skin.

This example’s code decides

  • The rules: GPU memory per class, free GPUs per node with the arithmetic in every refusal, drained nodes, pipelines, and which preemptible bookings a higher priority drop displaces.
  • The command language: a parser, Tab completion of job and node names, history, errors in a shell idiom, the y/n prompt before a booked job is requeued.
  • Every move, drag or command, applied as one state change and one undo step, preempted jobs included.
  • The figures: allocation per hour and per node, the queue, failures and power, and the series the minimap draws.
  • What a saved view also holds (the search and the filter), and the tmux status line that lists views as windows.

The code behind this demo.

These are the files this page runs, not a simplified copy. They compile against the public SuperScheduler Pro exports.

tsx.zip

The integration: SchedulerPanes with two panes, zoom levels (the queue pane without headers), rowHeaderColumns, the frozen cluster row, drained cells, links built from pipelines, the drag card that prints the command a drop runs, the context menu, and onEventMoving / onEventMove, where the rules decide and the drop is handed to the application.

/**
 * batchd: a GPU cluster and its batch queue as two tmux panes over one timeline. The nodes pane on
 * top (racks and their eight-GPU nodes under a frozen cluster row), the queue pane below (one row
 * per priority class); a job dragged from the queue onto a node is scheduled, one dragged back is
 * requeued.
 *
 * Library: SchedulerPanes (super-scheduler/panes) with cross-pane moves and a splitter, a resource
 * tree with rowHeaderColumns, a frozen summary row painted by onBeforeCellRender, two time header
 * rows written by onBeforeTimeHeaderRender, zoom levels, overlapping events (allowEventOverlap)
 * stacked in lanes, two-line HTML cards, disabled cells for drained nodes, finish-to-start links,
 * a separator at the cluster clock, the full crosshair, rows.filter and events.filter, event
 * selection with Ctrl/⌘+click and rectangles (rectangleSelectHandling) moved together
 * (allowMultiMove), the full keyboard model, undo history, the event hover card and the drag card
 * (super-scheduler/react-render) and a context menu. Application: GPU memory per class, free GPUs
 * per node, drains, pipelines, which preemptible bookings a drop displaces, the queue's priorities
 * and every figure. Those rules live in ./rules; ./paint writes the markup. Every move is applied
 * by the demo as one state change and one undo step (onEventMove cancels the library's own commit).
